Major search engines are in for a competition from the newest entrant: YaCy. YaCy is a search engine that aims to put search into the hands of users, literally, by distributing the indexing engine around the net.
All you do is download the YaCy software, and anyone can do it run it in your computer, and help the search system improve and spread the load of queries. The software is available for Linux, Windows and MacOS
It is also hoped YaCy will be much difficult to censor compared to the other existing search engines
The YaCy search page was opened officially on Tuesday 28 November, and currently there are about 600 participants /peers who share the load of queries and do the information indexing. YaCy ( "Ya See") is a project supported by the Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE) an organization which tries to campaign for digital rights and also tries to help people be in control of their digital destiny.
YaCy does this protection of privacy by encrypting all queries sent through the system and allowing peer owners to build and manage their search profiles.
The first version of YaCy has been used and is refined on intranets for the FSFE and the Sciencenet search site.
On the opening day, YaCy struggled to handle all queries as the page was still a demo version.
